Column of Plenty
found garden pots and ornaments, ca 600x30x30cm

For this work, made especially the for the PaltzBiënnale, Bjarland collected various garden accessories and garden ornaments at the trash; plastic pots and garden vases, a broken wing from an ornamental bird, a parasol foot and a rusty lantern. Stacked on top of each other, they form a six meter high monumental sculpture, placed next to the entrance pathway of the Paltz estate in Soest. The shape of the work hints at Brancusi's Endless Column, but rather than being a repetition of the same abstract shape, serious and formal as the original, Bjarland nods at it in a playful way. By including damaged and broken objects, and topping the column with a bleached out plastic plant, she adds a layer of humour to the work, hinting at the excess and absurdity of these often ephemeral objects.
